I’m going to go out and say it – Snapchat is becoming one of my favourite apps.

I live and breathe social media but strangely enough, Snapchat didn't take my fancy until very recently. Snapchat stepped it up with their new update and it’s now much more than just a channel to share my daily lunch #wins with friends. I know, I know – could it possibly be better than Fruit Ninja or Instagram? The answer is yes and here are some reasons why.

Lenses

These could be the most fun you can have with your iPhone. The Snapchat lenses let you take a selfie and add some pretty funny effects to your face. It’s like Photo Booth on steroids. The best thing about the lenses is that they interact with your face as you move it. For example, you can turn yourself into a dog that licks the screen as you open your mouth – seriously. Snapchat updates the selection daily so you never run out of photos to share.

Included in these lenses is Face Swap, which does exactly what you expect. Basically, it will transfer your face to the face of the person standing next to you and vice versa. For maximum LOLs, I like to face swap with the closest baby – too funny!

Snapchat Discover

Snapchat Discover is seriously cool and if you haven’t already used it, I suggest you get on that ASAP. Snapchat has partnered with the biggest news and media publishers in the world to bring news to straight to you, Snapchat style. Just log on to your Discover channel and you can watch curated video content and stories from your favourite media outlets. Watch live lion broadcasting from the pride land Africa on the National Geographic channel or get really behind the scenes with MTV – Snapchat Discover gives you a different spin on the news and the feed is refreshed every 24 hours.

SnapChat Chat 2.0

Snapchat has more chat than ever before and I wasn’t even sure that was possible. The new chat 2.0 gives you access to 200 plus stickers for your private chats including my personal favourite, a monkey vomiting rainbows. You know what they say, if you can’t say it with words then you can say it with a sticker. Plus, if you’ve snapped a special message you can send personal audio and video loops to any of your friends. But, that’s not all. Snapchat is taking on competitor apps like Messenger and Whatsapp with the ability to make audio and video calls as you are snapping. I think that’s a snap!

Story Replies

Sometimes there is one total gem of a photo in the midst of your mate’s daily Snapchat story. Before now you’ve haven’t been able to reply to just one picture, you had to reply to the whole story. Now you can single out the best pic from the bunch and reply to that one hilarious photo with an equally witty reply. Your friend will receive your response along with their original photo. In terms of tech, it's not the most groundbreaking feature, but it’s pretty handy.

Hidden Features

There are two hidden features that will turn you into a little bit of a Snapchat wizard. You’ve probably noticed that Snapchat tends to burn through your data but it doesn’t have to. There is a travel mode within the app that will reduce data by not loading any received snaps automatically. Secondly, you can turn on night mode that will allow you to take brighter snaps in low light. It’s perfect for gigs and parties.

That’s it! The new Snapchat features unpacked. Which one is your favourite? Let us know in the comments below.
