What is amaysim's network and coverage like?

Quick answer

All amaysim mobile and data-only plans are powered by the Optus Mobile Network, which covers 98.5% of the Aussie population. You’ll need to be using a 4G enabled device and be in a 4G coverage area to access 4G signal, otherwise your device will select the strongest available signal in your area, which in most cases will be 3G.

What will my coverage be like?

All amaysim mobile and data-only plans are powered by the Optus Mobile Network, which covers 98.5% of the Aussie population.

Coverage will depend on factors such as your device, software, location, your distance from a network tower and network traffic. To access 4G signal you’ll need to be using a 4G enabled device and be in a 4G coverage area.

When you’re on the go you may find your device switching between 4G and 3G, this is because your device will automatically select the strongest signal in your area.

Does amaysim have 4G?

Yes! All amaysim mobile and data-only plans are powered by the Optus 4G Plus Network.

4G is the fourth generation in mobile network technology, so if you’re in an area with 4G coverage and have a 4G compatible handset the Optus 4G Plus network can provide faster data speeds and a better mobile internet experience than the 3G network.

Currently the Optus 4G Plus network is a data-only network. The 3G network is still used to make and receive calls so you’ll drop back to 3G signal whenever you make calls.

What is the difference between 3G & 4G?

The key difference between 3G and 4G are the potential data speeds you can access on your mobile device.

While the exact speed of the Optus 4G Plus network will depend on factors such as your device, software, location, your distance from a network tower and network traffic, you can expect faster downloads, uploads and web browsing, better video and music streaming experiences and crisper picture quality when using 4G over 3G.

What frequencies are used on the Optus Mobile Network?

The Optus Mobile Network uses multiple frequencies (LTE 700 / 1800 / 2100 / 2300 / 2600 MHz) to provide coverage. Your device will need to be unlocked and compatible with at least the 2100MHz, 2600MHz or 900MHz frequencies to be used with an amaysim SIM card.

To get the best possible 4G data speeds, you’ll want a device that supports the 700MHz frequency. Some popular devices that are 700MHz compatible include:

  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 7 / 7Plus
  • iPhone 6s / 6s Plus
