What is Data Rollover?

Data rollover is a mobile plan feature that lets you keep any unused data from one recharge period and carry it forward to the next, rather than losing it when your billing cycle resets.

In practice, if your plan includes 100GB per month and you only use 50GB, the remaining 50GB rolls over into the following month, giving you 150GB to work with.

All of our mobile plans include unlimited data rollover with no expiry as long as you stay on the same plan.

Is Data Rollover the Same as Data Banking?

Data rollover and data banking are often used interchangeably, but some providers treat them differently. Data rollover typically means unused data carries over to the next billing period only, while data banking can refer to longer-term storage where your unused data accumulates indefinitely. Over time, this builds up a buffer of data you can draw on during heavier usage months.

At amaysim, there's no distinction. You get unlimited data rollover with no expiry on eligible plans, meaning your unused data keeps accumulating for as long as you stay on your plan.

How Data Rollover Works

Usage Order

Most providers, including amaysim, prioritise your current period's data allowance first. You'll generally use your fresh monthly data before dipping into your rolled-over balance (from time to time, network behaviour may mean that data is used in a different order, however total data inclusions will remain unchanged). This means your banked data can sit there as a safety net for months when you need more.

Eligibility

To keep your rolled-over data, you need to stay on the same plan. As long as your plan is active and paid up, your data banking takes care of itself. If you miss a payment, your data bank will be automatically reinstated the moment you renew.

You’ll only lose your banked data if you switch to a different plan.

Rollover Limits

Rollover limits refer to where a provider caps the amount of data you can roll over or limits it to one billing cycle. amaysim does not have rollover limits or cap your data banking in any way. This means that there’s no limit to the amount of data that can be stored in your data bank as long as you remain on your current plan.

How Can You Lose Rolled-Over Data?

There are a few situations where your banked data can be forfeited. These will depend on your provider but can include:

  • Switching to a different plan, even with the same provider
  • Letting your plan expire or not recharging in time
  • Cancelling your account or service
  • Moving to a different provider

How to Check Your Data Rollover Balance

Most providers let you check your data balance, including any rolled-over data, through their app or website.

With amaysim, you can check this anytime via the amaysim app or My amaysim online.

amaysim also sends usage alerts at 50%, 85% and 100% of your combined data allowance, so you're not left guessing how much you've got left.

Benefits of Data Rollover

Data rollover gives you more control over what you're paying for:

  • No wasted data. Every gigabyte you pay for stays available to you as long as you stay on your plan, even if you don't use it straight away.
  • A buffer for heavy months. Travel, streaming binges or working remotely can spike your usage. Rolled-over data helps avoid needing to buy a top-up or upgrade your plan for a one-off month.
