About eSIMs: What is an eSIM?
Learn what an eSIM is, how it works, the benefits it offers, and how to set one up on your device.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of a traditional SIM card.
Just like a physical SIMs, eSIMs store important information like your mobile number, carrier information, and a unique identifier.
With an eSIMs, you can connect your compatible phone or other device to a mobile network in order to make calls, send text messages and use data. All without needing to insert a physical SIM.
eSIMs vs physical SIMs
Physical SIMs are small plastic cards that contain a microchip and must be inserted into your phone. The small size of physical SIMs, particularly the micro and nano sizes, can make them awkward to handle.
eSIMs, on the other hand, are built into most new devices device when it is manufactured and are used in phones, tablets and smartwatches. Having an eSIM removes the need to obtain and insert a physical SIM card. Once you sign up for a mobile phone plan, your eSIM is activated remotely, letting you make calls, send messages, and stay connected.
History of eSIMs in Australia
Globally, eSIM technology first appeared in Google’s Pixel 2 phones in 2017, followed by Apple introducing eSIM capability with the iPhone XS and XR in 2018.
In Australia, eSIMs gained momentum from 2019 onwards, as major telecommunications carriers began offering support. Adoption has continued to grow throughout the early 2020s as more compatible devices entered the market.
In 2025 iPhone Air was the first model available in Australia with eSIM-only capability. This followed the trend set in the US, where new iPhones have been eSIM only since 2022. It’s expected that more newly released devices will transition to eSIM-only in the coming years.
How do you activate an eSIM?
You can activate an eSIM either while setting up a new phone or switch to an eSIM from a physical SIM down the track. Either way, it will only take a few minutes to get your eSIM up and running, all at no additional cost.
Each device and mobile provider may have slightly different activation steps. Options may include downloading an app, using a service provider link, entering your eSIM information manually, or scanning a QR code.
See amaysim’s video for how to activate your eSIM below:
Whichever eSIM activation method you use, ensure you are connected to strong private Wi-Fi, avoid letting your device go to sleep and don’t make any phone calls during the activation process.

How do you use an eSIM?
Once your eSIM is activated and connected to a mobile plan, you won’t need to think about your eSIM again, as you’ll simply use your phone just like you would if there was a physical SIM card inserted.

Can I switch from a physical SIM card to an eSIM?
As long as your phone is eSIM compatible, you should be able to switch from a physical SIM to an eSIM within a couple of minutes.
See amaysim’s video for how to activate your eSIM below:
Which phones are eSIM compatible?
Most new smart phones now support eSIM, including:
- Apple: XS and XR or newer
- Samsung: Galaxy S20 or newer
- Google: Pixel 3a or newer
To check if your device is eSIM compatible, dial *#06#. If a 32-digit EID number appears, your device is eSIM compatible.
EID stands for ‘Embedded Identity Document’ and is your eSIM’s unique serial number.
You can also check your phone’s Settings under Mobile Network, Mobile Service or SIM Manager to see if an eSIM option appears.
If you’re in the market for a new phone, choosing one with an eSIM capability is a smart way to future-proof your technology.
How do you transfer an eSIM to your new phone?
The process of transferring your eSIM to another eSIM compatible phone will vary depending on your mobile provider.

- Open the amaysim app
- Log in using your credentials

What is a data-only eSIM?
A data-only eSIM allow you to access the internet and use online services, but it does not support traditional phone calls or text messages.
You will still be able to communicate using internet-based apps like WhatsApp or social media messaging platforms.
What are the benefits of eSIM?
eSIMs have many advantages over physical SIM cards. Here are six benefits:
#1 Faster and Easier Networks Changes
It should be easier and faster to switch network providers because you don’t need to go out to buy a physical SIM card, or wait for one to arrive in the post.
#2 International Travel
When travelling internationally for work or fun, it’s easier to swap your connection to a local network using an eSIM. You will need to purchase a eSIM from a local provider.
#3 Use Multiple Phone Numbers
Devices that support multiple eSIMs, or a combination of a physical SIM and an eSIM allow you to operate more than one phone number. This benefit is ideal for people who want separate numbers for work and personal needs without having to carry two devices.
#4 Access Multiple Networks
You can switch between networks on the same device (though only one can be active at a time) if you have two eSIMs on different networks. This flexibility is particularly useful for those in remote areas with limited coverage.
#5 More Eco-Friendly
eSIMs reduce plastic waste from the physical SIM card and packaging.
#6 Allows Lighter, Thinner Devices
eSIMs take up less space than physical SIMs, manufacturers can design thinner, lighter devices or use extra space for larger batteries and other components, when designing eSIM only devices.
