Summary

In September 2025, nbn will upgrade FTTP/HFC wholesale speeds:

  • nbn Home Fast” tier access speeds (amaysim Fast As plans with current typical evening speed of 100Mbps/18Mbps 7-11pm) will increase from 100/20 Mbps to 500/50 Mbps (typical evening speed 7-11pm to be confirmed)
  • nbn Home Superfast” tier access speeds (amaysim Superfast As plans with current typical evening speed of 250/22 Mbps 7-11pm) will increase from 250/25 Mbps to 750/50 Mbps (typical evening speed 7-11pm to be confirmed)
  • nbn Home Ultrafast” tier access speeds will increase from 1000/50 Mbps (current typical evening speed of 780/40 Mbps 7-11pm) to 1000/100 Mbps (typical evening speed 7-11pm to be confirmed). This speed tier will be new to amaysim nbn for September.

Don’t forget that nbn’s wholesale access speed is the speed sold to internet providers like amaysim, however the actual speed you get at home can be a little lower.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you're on FTTP or HFC technology for NBN and on an “nbn Home Fast” 100/20Mbps or “nbn Home Superfast” 250/25Mbps speed tier, you could be eligible for an automatic upgrade in September to the faster speed tier. To upgrade to an eligible speed tier log into your my amaysim to change your plan.
  • Get your home equipment ready ensure your modem/router is no more than 5 years old and can support your speeds. We recommend a Wi-Fi 6 or 7 capable modem/router

Australia's internet is about to get a major boost. In September 2025, the NBN network will deliver access to dramatically faster speeds on eligible FTTP/HFC plans - and for amaysim customers, this could mean much faster speeds for mid and high-level plans.

Here, we'll cover details of the speed upgrade, how this could impact your amaysim plan, and what you can do to prepare.

What is the NBN speed upgrade?

In September 2025, the NBN will upgrade its network to allow it to deliver faster internet speeds. With more households streaming 4K content simultaneously, working from home, and using smart home devices this upgrade addresses the need for more speed and reliability while preparing for increasing network demand in the future.

For customers on certain plans FTTP/HFC plans, this will mean access to faster downloads smoother streaming.

Speed tier changes

The upcoming network upgrades will impact customers with a Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) NBN connection and, in summary, amaysim NBN will see the following changes on plans on FTTP and HFC:

  • nbn Home Fast” tier access speeds will increase from 100/20 Mbps to 500/50 Mbps
  • nbn Home Superfast” tier access speeds will increase from 250/25 Mbps to 750/50 Mbps
  • nbn Home Ultrafast” tier access speeds will increase from 1000/50 Mbps to 1000/100 Mbps. This will be a new amaysim nbn plan with current typical evening speed to be confirmed in September.

See typical evening speeds below.

Here’s exactly how the speed upgrades will affect each amaysim plan:

Don’t forget that nbn’s wholesale access speed is the speed sold to internet providers like amaysim, however the actual speed you get at home can be a little lower, depending on factors like your modem and your home setup. You will need to check that current modem is a recent model, capable of accommodating these speeds, or if upgrade if needed to get the best performance (for more info on this see “Hardware requirements” below).

For eligible customers with the right set up, these speed increases will improve your internet experience better 4k streaming on multiple devices, typically faster file downloads and predictably optimal performance for video calls and online gaming. These upgrades will be automatic and at no extra cost, amaysim will contact you to confirm your speed upgrade has been successful. If you are still on other technology besides FTTP/HFC you can check back in September 2025 to see if you will be eligible for amaysim's Fibre Upgrade.

How can I make the most of the NBN speed tier upgrade?

Firstly, you’ll need to make sure that:

  • You have a FTTP or HFC connection to your home
  • You have at least a nbn 100/20Mbps speed tier plan or above, this is equivalent to amaysim’s current Fast As plan and above (see table above for further details). To upgrade to an eligible speed tier log into your my amaysim to change your plan.

Next, you'll need to make sure that you have up-to-date hardware and devices to reach these faster speeds. Your equipment determines whether you'll actually experience the speed improvements.

Hardware requirements:

  • Modem/Router: Check that your modem/router has gigabit (1Gbps) ethernet WAN port so it can access the maximum speeds of the new plan speeds and ensure that Wi-Fi standard it uses is Wi-Fi 5 and above (we recommend Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6e or Wi-Fi 7 for future-proofing). Older routers may work however they will not take advantage of the new speeds coming in September, so best to have a modem no more than 5 years old with a gigabit WAN port.
  • Ethernet cables: Cat 5e or higher recommended for wired connections.
  • Devices: Older devices may not be able to reach the full speeds of your plan, so make sure your laptops, phones, and smart TVs can handle high-speed connections

Check your current equipment specifications before the September upgrade to determine if you'll need upgrades to access the full speed benefits.

How can I check my connection type?

If you’re unsure of your NBN connection type, you can check here using amaysim's NBN service tool.

Why are certain connections not included in the upgrade?

Plans that rely on Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), Fibre to the Building (FTTB) or nbn Fixed Wireless are not eligible. These connections rely on existing copper phone lines for the final stretch or wireless technology for nbn Fixed Wireless, which limits their maximum speeds and makes them unable to pass the benefits of these upgrades.

FTTP delivers internet directly via fibre optic cables to your home, offering the most reliable and fastest speeds. HFC uses existing pay-TV cables for the final connection and can achieve similar speeds to FTTP. Hence why plans that use Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections are eligible for the upgrade, as they have the capacity for the faster speeds.

Check back in September 2025 to see if you will be eligible for amaysim's Fibre Upgrade.

What if I don’t have an FTTP or HFC connection?

You may be eligible for an upgrade to your connection amaysim calls this Fibre Upgrade and it will be available in September.

NBN Co is currently expanding its full fibre network across Australia. If your address qualifies, you can get connected to a FTTP line. This means faster speeds, better reliability, and access to the new speed tiers launching in September.

Please note:

  • If you change your nbn plan or move address it could effect your eligibility for this free automatic upgrade

For customers with a current FTTP or HFC connection and an eligible plan, there’s no need to worry. The actual speed upgrades in September will be automatic, with no further action required. amaysim will contact you once your upgrade is complete.

If you're considering upgrading your plan to take advantage of these speed increases, timing matters. Getting your upgrade sorted early means you'll avoid the rush and be ready to enjoy faster speeds from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simple answer is no.

But when people talk about WiFi they often mean the connection to the internet.

The NBN (National Broadband Network) is a good option for getting internet to your home. Check out if you can get NBN with the help of amaysim!

Currently, NBN is still faster than 5G in common uses cases for the internet.

While 5G can theorectically be faster, in the the real world NBN speeds are more consistently faster and stable than 5G.

4G/5G used for broadband purposes are often more mobile than NBN speeds they can fluctuate from location to location.
