UPGRADE TO FIBRE IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS

Fibre upgrade allows eligible NBN fibre to the node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) customers to upgrade to NBN's FTTP (Fibre to the Premise) – which allows for a faster and more stable internet connection to future proof your home and unlock greater speeds. The installation process takes around 2-4 weeks.

An important reminder about medical and security alarms

amaysim Home Internet does not support specialised services like Back to Base Security Alarms or Medical Alarms and we do not support back battery back. This means that many specialised services will not work during a power outage. It is important that you contact your medical or security provider to check if these services are compatible with the NBN network. You can find more information on the NBN Co website.

If your current service is with another provider, we need to tell you the following

  1. We recommend you do not request disconnection of your existing service until your new amaysim nbn service is working, to help ensure you're not left without a working service.

  2. The transfer of your service is subject to validation that it can be transferred.

  3. While you have the right to transfer your service from one provider to another, there may be costs and obligations arising from a contract with your current service provider which may include early termination fees.

  4. If you need any customer support or help with faults at any time before your service is transferred to amaysim you'll need to contact your current service provider.

  5. You should contact your provider to make sure your account has been closed after your service is up and running with amaysim.

  6. We will let you know with an SMS once your service has switched to amaysim.

  7. You may notice a short interruption.

The terms and conditions of these plans are set out at here.

Frequently Asked Questions

To see if you qualify for a Fibre Upgrade, simply enter your address here  If your address is eligible, the Fibre Upgrade option will appear and look like this:

Here’s what you need to meet the criteria for a Fibre Upgrade:

  1. Have an existing copper connection type: FTTN/ FTTC. Existing connection types (FTTP and HFC) do not require an upgrade.

  2. Have had NBN roll out the fibre network in your area. Enter your address here [anchorlink to address checker]. If you don’t see the Fibre Upgrade option, NBN hasn't yet rolled out the fibre network in your area.

  3. Select an eligible speed plan:

    • NBN 500

    • NBN 750

    • NBN 1000

Fibre Upgrade is unavailable for the NBN 25, NBN 50, and NBN 100 speed plans.

No, some customers have been identified by NBN to have poor performing lines where they experience a high level of drop outs/internet stability issues. To improve the internet experience for these customers, amaysim will connect the premises directly on fibre and customers can choose any plan from NBN 25 through to NBN 1000.

NBN will perform a standard installation* to upgrade your home to fibre at no cost.

Important
An NBN technician will assess whether your home can be upgraded to fibre under the standard installation guidelines. If additional work is required beyond this scope you’ll need to hire a private technician at your own expense. This typically occurs when customers want to place their modem in a specific room or location that is too far from the NBN utility box.

*Standard installation: the NBN connection box should be installed 3 metres from an existing power point outlet inside the premises, and 12 metres radial distance from your NBN utility box. If there is no suitable location within 12 metres (from your NBN utility box) according to the NBN technician guidelines, they will, where feasible, install the NBN connection box in the nearest most suitable location beyond 12 metres.

After placing your Fibre Upgrade Order, your new Fibre service will be up and running in 2 to 4 weeks on average.

The installation appointment generally takes between 2 to 4 hours. In some cases, multiple appointments may be required to complete the installation process.

After you place your fibre upgrade order, we will arrange the earliest available appointment with an NBN technician, who will visit your home to install the fibre connection. An adult must be home during the entire installation process.

We will send you the appointment details – typically within an hour of placing your order – via email or SMS. Additionally, you can find this information in My amaysim.

If the scheduled time is not suitable, you have the option to reschedule your appointment up to 3 in My amaysim. For further rescheduling request you can contact us.

Yes, it is highly likely that you’ll experience some downtime during the installation as the NBN technician may need to disconnect the power and internet for approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

This depends on what you currently have. You’ll need to ensure your equipment is compatible to support your new service.

Your Equipment

  • Wi-Fi router with a port at the back called 'WAN'

  • Ethernet cable (also known as RJ-45)

Your Wi-Fi Version

For the best experience your modem/router needs to support at least:

  • Wi-Fi version 4 (also known as 802.11n) which has a typical maximum speed of up to 100 Mbps for the NBN 25, NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans

  • Wi-Fi version 5 (also known as 802.11ac) which has a typical maximum speed of up to 500 Mbps for the NBN 500 plan.

  • Wi-Fi version 6 (also known as 802.11ax) which has a typical maximum speed of up to 1000 Mbps for the NBN 750 and NBN 1000 plans.

The Newer the Better

We recommend using a modem/router that has been purchased within the last 5 years. Older equipment may have limitations or may not function with our service.

Modem Setup

If you’re already using (or have purchased) a modem/router from another NBN® provider, you may need to configure or update the settings to ensure it works with us. Either way, we can help you get all set up. Please ensure your device hasn't been locked by your previous provider.

Modem recommendations have been provided by NBN. For further information click here. It is your responsibility to ensure your self-supplied modem can connect to amaysim NBN and achieve your nbn plan speeds. Your modem/router and how it is set up in your house may affect your ability to reach the maximum speed of your plan.

During the installation

  • The NBN technician mounts an NBN utility box on the exterior wall and installs an NBN connection box inside the home

  • The technician runs fibre cable from the street to connect both boxes

  • This typically requires drilling and may involve some minor digging work

  • The indoor connection box must be placed within 3 meters of a power outlet and within 12 meters of the outdoor utility box

After the installation

  • We’ll let you know that your new fibre service is ready to be used

  • You’ll connect your Wi-Fi router to your new NBN connection box using an Ethernet cable

Cancelling your previous copper service

If you were previously with another provider, you’ll need to reach out to them to cancel your previous copper service.

If you’re an existing amaysim Home Internet customer, your old service will be switched off either:

  • 6 days after we send you confirmation your NBN fibre service is active, or

  • 1 day after we detect you start using your new NBN fibre service

whichever happens first.

Yes. Landlord permission is essential for this installation as it requires the mounting of new equipment, likely drilling and potentially digging at your premises.

We understand this isn’t ideal but because the fibre network has not yet been rolled out in your area by NBN, your address is currently ineligible for NBN service.

NBN plans to extend fibre connectivity to an additional 5 million homes and businesses by the end of 2025, so be sure to stay updated on any announcements.

If you reside in a building, the fibre upgrade must be coordinated directly with NBN through your strata.

If the NBN technician is unable to complete the fibre installation due to specific requirements that fall outside NBN scope, you will need to hire a private contractor at your own cost.

Yes, you must contact your current NBN provider to cancel your copper service once you start using your new fibre service.

If you have an existing NBN copper service with amaysim, we will cancel your service 6 days after your fibre installation is complete, or sooner if we detect that you have begun using it.

  1. After you place your order, we will schedule an appointment with an NBN technician.

  2. If the scheduled time is inconvenient, you can easily reschedule your appointment up to 3 times through My amaysim. For further rescheduling request contact us.

  3. You or someone aged 18 or older must be present at home during the appointment.

  4. The appointment may involve some drilling and digging – the NBN technician will seek your permission to proceed with this work.

  5. As part of your standard installation, the NBN technician will provide you with limited options for the placement of your new NBN connection box and router. You’ll need to accept one of these options otherwise you’ll be responsible for hiring a private technician at your own expense to extend your home network to your preferred location.

  6. If you’re renting, your landlord must approve the fibre upgrade installation in advance.

  7. To get connected, you’ll need the following equipment:

    1. An Ethernet cable

    2. A router with a port labeled 'WAN' at the back

    3. The router must be compatible with the appropriate Wi-Fi version:

      1. For speeds up to down arrow 500 Mbps – use a Wi-Fi 5 or higher compatible router

      2. For speeds ranging from down arrow 750-1000 Mbps – use a Wi-Fi 6 or 7 compatible router

  8. Once your new fibre service is activated you’ll need to cancel your existing copper service and its associated billing with your previous provider. If you’re an existing amaysim Home Internet customer, we’ll handle this cancellation for you. It will be processed 6 days after your new service is connected or sooner, if we confirm that you’re already using your new fibre service.
