What is the Victorian Default Offer?

Quick answer

The Victorian Default Offer (VDO), is an electricity retail offer being introduced for residential households and small businesses across Victoria from July 1, 2019.

This offer has been introduced by the Victorian Government, who alongside the Essential Services Commission, have set an annual price for a benchmark consumption level across the state. It is the same price for all energy retailers.

The price of electricity under the Victorian Default Offer is based on advice provided by the Essential Services Commission and is not set by energy retailers.

Why is the VDO being introduced?

The VDO replaces the former standing offer scheme and is part of the Victorians government’s Energy Fairness Planto make the electricity market simpler and more affordable for all consumers; something amaysim is extremely passionate about.

Do I qualify for the VDO?

The VDO will be available to all Victorian residential households and small businesses from 1 July, 2019.

If you live in an apartment block, retirement home, caravan park, or you’re a small business tenant in a shopping centre, you may be receiving your electricity through an embedded network. Embedded networks can’t access the Victorian Default Offer at this stage.

The Essential Services Commission will review the VDO price for customers in embedded networks in the near future.

You can check whether electricity at your address is supplied by an embedded network at the Essential services commission register.
