How Facebook knows when you're in love before you do

It’s that special time of year again when everyone on your social newsfeed seems to be poking, tagging and generally getting down and flirty with the object of their digital affections.

But before you hit the unfollow button, Relationships Australia has some good news - social media activity, especially on Facebook, tends to decline once a couple makes their relationship Facebook official by changing their relationship status from ‘Single’ to ‘In a relationship’.

According to Facebook Data Science, the number of timeline posts shared between lovers steadily declines once they change their relationship status from ‘Single’ to ‘In a relationship’. In the graph below you can see a slow but steady increase in the number of timeline posts 100 days out from the start of a relationship. When the Relationship Status officially changes to ‘In a relationship’, the posts start to decrease. Let’s be honest - when you’re into someone you visit each other’s profile, send messages and post links or inside jokes on each other’s timeline (and probably have your other Facebook mates gossiping in overdrive about your oh-so-obvious online advances). Once you’ve made it Facebook official chances are you’re spending heaps of time together so more of your communicating’s done in person.

They also found that while the frequency of timeline posts between the couple declines, the content becomes sweeter and more positive. Facebook Science Data used statistical methods to analyse the proportion of words expressing positive emotions (like “love”, “nice”, “happy”, etc.) minus the proportion of words expressing negative emotions (like “hate”, “hurt”, “bad”, etc). And they made the following graph to show the general increase in positive sentiments after the relationship’s “day 0”. Check out the major increase in days 0 and 1. #RelationshipGoals

So there you go. Now you know what happens to your social (media) life when you fall in love. All you have to do now is get on to a plan that let's you talk, text and hit up social media to your heart's content (I wonder where you could find an awesome plan like that...#ShamelessPlug).
