Late last year we posted a blog to give amaysim 2G customers a heads up that our carrier, Optus, will be switching off its 2G network from 1 April 2017.

If you missed it, you can read all about it here.

Today (Tuesday 31 January 2017) we’ve emailed customers who are impacted (those using their amaysim service on either a 2G or 3G single band phone) to let them know what they need to do. If you’re one of these customers or you just want some more info on the 2G switch off, you’re in luck - we’ve got all of your questions answered.

When exactly will the 2G network be shut down?

Optus will be flicking the switch on its 2G network from 1 April 2017 (no this isn’t a joke!). It will be a phased switch off, starting on 1 April 2017 and continuing for a few months across Australia. That said, we highly recommend that you upgrade your phone well in advance to avoid any interruptions to your amaysim service.

Why is the 2G network being shut down?

The Optus 2G network was launched back in 1993. Needless to say a lot has changed in that time and it’s no longer up to speed anymore (pun intended).

How do I know if my phone will be affected?

You can check whether your phone is affected by checking your IMEI number online. You can check your IMEI number here. To get your IMEI number, simply type in *#06# into your phone keypad.

What happens if I don't upgrade my phone?

Your phone won’t get reception so you won’t be able to use it – unless you’re wanting to go off the grid then you’ll need to get cracking!

What do I do if my current SIM card does not fit my new phone?

No worries, all you need to do is get a replacement amaysim SIM card. You can order a replacement SIM card by simply logging into My amaysim. Here’s everything you need to know on how to replace your amaysim SIM card.
